ABCs decision to interrupt General Hospital for breaking coverage of President Donald Trumps meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin has sparked a wave of backlash on social media on Friday.
The network cut into the long-running soap to air David Muirs live update on the tense summit in Anchorage, A.K., where Trump and Putin held more than two hours of talks aimed at securing a Ukraine ceasefire.
While the meeting was billed as a major diplomatic moment, many fans of the daytime drama took to social media to vent their frustration, accusing Muir of exaggerating the urgency of the broadcast.
And yet, David Muir is still spinning it as negatively as he can, one user wrote.
Another complained, David Muir, you interrupted #GH for nothing.
Some criticism turned personal. David Muir should sit his a** down at ALASKA 2025. Hes arrogant and disrespectful, one post read.
Another said bluntly, “OUTRAGEOUS & UNACCEPTABLE..cant believe that ABC has such TOTAL disrespect for GH, who has made MANY millions for them over the years, but, esp for the audiencenothing happened that warranted these cut ins DAVID MUIR is a joke, & is the last one I would turn to for any news.”
Muir told viewers that reporters in Anchorage were being moved into position to hear from both leaders and that discussions were still ongoing.
Before departing Washington, Trump had set a clear benchmark for success. I want a ceasefire, he said. If I dont get one today, Im not going to be happy. If this doesnt go well, Ill walk.
According to White House aides, the talks were frank and direct, while Russian state media described them as constructive.
Kremlin officials said Moscow remained open to serious discussions provided its security concerns were addressed.
I expect that todays agreements will become a reference point not only for solving the Ukrainian problem, but will also mark the beginning of the restoration of businesslike, pragmatic relations between Russia and the U.S., Putin said during the press conference.
Trump elaborated on the summit and some policies, saying, Some are not that significant. One is probably the most significant, but we have a very good chance of getting there. We didnt get there, but we have a very good chance of getting there.
The Trump-Putin summit was the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since Russias full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
All of Russias legitimate concerns must be taken into account, and a fair balance in the security sphere in Europe and the world as a whole must be restored, Putin stated.
