Kanye West took to X, formerly Twitter, to announce his latest business venture just one week after the trailer dropped for his upcoming documentary ‘In Whose Name?’
Kanye West has announced his latest venture on X, but fans are worried for him.
The rapper made a series of posts on August 20 announcing that he has created his own cryptocurrency. One post featured a four-second video of Kanye wearing a black shirt standing in front of a plain white background as he said, “The official Yeezy token just dropped” through his grill-covered teeth. The video was accompanied by a link to a website where people can buy and sell ‘YZY.’
Fans flooded the post with comments accusing the Yeezus rapper of using an AI-generated version of himself for the video and expressing worry over his well-being, while several people called his latest project a ‘scam.’
Another X post featured a screenshot of a text with the caption “YEEZY MONEY IS HERE A NEW ECONOMY, BUILT ON CHAIN.”
According to the website he linked to, which features a crypto payment processor called ‘Ye Pay,’ “YZY Money is a concept to put you in control, free from centralized authority.”
Several fans felt that there was something off about the video, prompting several comments asking Grok, the social media platform’s AI assistant, whether the video was AI or not. Many were worried about his well-being. The post was inundated with comments like, “gotta be ai,” “looks like ai to me,” and “This is AI look at his eyes.”
One user wrote, “did he just post an AI video of himself on his own account?” while another joked, “Are you kidnapped?”
Another fan brought out the receipts, commenting a screenshot from a post Ye made in February that claims he was not planning on getting involved in cryptocurrency, which read, in all caps, “IM NOT DOING A COIN I MAKE PRODUCTS I ONLY DO THINGS I AM PASSIONATE AND KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT IM TOO RICH TO DO ANYTHING ELSE COINS PREY ON THE FANS WITH HYPE JUST LIKE HYPED UP SNEARKERS CULTURE.”
One commenter wrote, “Who is this suppose to be for? Like who actually asked for this?”
Aside from his new currency, Kanye released a teaser last week for the upcoming documentary film “In Whose Name?” directed by Nico Ballesteros over the course of six years. The film, which features his ex-wife, reality star Kim Kardashian, is slated to premiere in select theaters on September 19.
