Sophie Cunningham addressed the ongoing issue of sex toys being thrown onto the court during WNBA games, including an incident where she was hit with one during the Fever game against the Los Angeles Sparks
Sophie Cunningham has finally given her side of one of the most unexpected WNBA moments ever after being hit by a neon green sex toy during a game in Los Angeles.
The Indiana Fever guard was on the floor against the Los Angeles Sparks on Aug. 5 at Crypto.com Arena when she suddenly felt something strike her foot. At first, she thought it was an opponent’s shoe or a stray bump during a competitive game, but a glance down revealed that another sex toy had been thrown from the crowd, this time hitting her as a follow-up to her social media request, begging for fans to stop throwing objects on the court.
Cunningham was hit by the toy while leaving her lane line following Kelsey Plum’s three free throw attempts after being fouled by Kelsey Mitchell as the Fever were down by 10 points. She initially jumped in the air in shock as Plum reacted by immediately kicking it away in frustration and checking on her opponent with a quick tap before resuming play.
The Fever guard addressed the situation on her new ‘Show Me Something’ podcast and admitted that the adult toy toss may have been linked to her own social media post days earlier.
Cunningham begged to stop fans from throwing sex toys on the court after it happened for a second time during the Golden State Valkyries versus Chicago Sky game three days prior.
The toy landed on the court after bouncing several times, ending up under the away team’s basket.
“I feel like I brought that onto myself because I tweeted”, she said, referencing her viral plea. “Dude, that tweet got over 40 million views. I tweeted it like, joking, but also a little bit serious.”
“We were playing against LA I was at the free throw line, the girl shot, and then I felt something hit my foot, and I thought someone had kicked me or whatever. I looked down, and it was a dildo, and it scared me. I jumped up, and everyone was like, ‘Why are you freaking out?’ My mind just wasn’t expecting that.”
It was the third time in eight days a WNBA game had been interrupted by an adult toy being thrown from the stands.
Cunningham said her train of thought vanished the moment she realized what hit her.
“It was like a bounce-hit, it scared the —- out of me. At least it didn’t hit me in the face or anything.”
Cunningham has been the only player who a toy made contact with on the floor.
Two individuals have been arrested, including the person who threw the object at you during the Phoenix Mercury vs. Connecticut Sun game, which took place on the same day as the Fever-Sparks game.
